Mark Hamsher is an independent, self-employed arbitrator who has no connections with any law firms or barristers’ chambers. He has the experience to handle the broadest range of general commercial and shipping disputes.
He has completed well over 1,900 ad hoc and institutional arbitrations. These have included more than 25 arbitrations for the LCIA, more than 20 arbitrations for the Chambre Arbitrale Maritime de Paris (conducted in French) and more than 15 arbitrations for the International Chamber of Commerce, including one as an emergency arbitrator. He has conducted about 25% of the arbitrations either as sole arbitrator or as chairman of the tribunal.
He has experience of general commercial disputes arising out of the trading of commodities including:
- Oil and oil products
- Chemicals
- Steel, copper and other metals
- Coal
- Grain, rice, sugar and other agricultural commodities
- Ammonia
- Petcoke
His experience of shipping arbitrations covers the complete spectrum of shipping contracts, including:
- Charterparties and bills of lading
- Sale and purchase contracts
- Contracts of affreightment
- Shipbuilding, ship repair and scrapping contracts
- Liquefaction of bauxite, copper concentrates and other bulk cargoes
- The construction, sale and purchase and chartering of superyachts
He has experience of disputes involving most aspects of the off-shore industry including:
- Drilling from oil platforms or semisubmersibles
- Pipe laying
- Trenching of pipes
- The operation of FPSO units
He has experience of the disputes arising in the liner industry including:
- Agreements for joint ventures or consortia
- Slot charter arrangements
- Agency disputes
Most of Mark Hamsher’s arbitration hearings take place in London, but he is happy to conduct hearings abroad.
He has carried out neutral evaluations and mediations.
He is regularly invited to speak at congresses and seminars in London and abroad.
